When specifying exterior cladding or interior wall finishes, architects, contractors and procurement teams often weigh two common metal-based materials: Aluminum Composite Panel (ACP) and Aluminum Solid Panel. Both deliver a modern metallic aesthetic, but they differ dramatically in cost, weight, fabrication and long-term performance. This guide compares the two so you can choose the right material for your project with confidence.
An aluminum composite panel consists of two thin aluminum skins bonded to a non-aluminum core. For standard grades the core is low-density polyethylene (PE); for fire-rated grades it is a mineral-filled, non-combustible core. The result is a rigid, flat, lightweight panel that is easy to cut, route, fold and fabricate into cassette shapes, columns, sunshades and curved facades. At Feiteng, we have produced ACP for over 30 years and export to customers in 56 countries, with 15 production lines and a daily output of 30,000 square meters of metal composite material.
An aluminum solid panel, also called aluminum solid sheet or aluminum veneer curtain wall panel, is a single monolithic sheet of aluminum alloy, usually 2.0 mm to 4.0 mm thick, coil-coated or fluorocarbon painted before fabrication. It has no sandwich core. It is heavier, more rigid and generally more expensive per square meter than ACP, but it offers superior impact resistance, full recyclability and a premium perceived quality that architects specify for landmark buildings.
| Factor | Aluminum Composite Panel | Aluminum Solid Panel |
|---|---|---|
| Typical thickness | 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm | 2.0-4.0 mm solid |
| Weight | 3.5-5 kg/m2 (4 mm) | 5.4-10.8 kg/m2 (2-4 mm) |
| Cost per m2 | Lower, roughly 40-60% less | Higher, 2-3x ACP |
| Flatness | Exceptionally flat out of factory | Prone to oil-canning if too thin |
| Fabrication | Easily routed, folded, cold-bent | Requires press-braking, welding |
| Fire performance | A2 / B1 / B2 cores available | Naturally non-combustible |
| Recyclability | Aluminum skins recyclable, core varies | Fully recyclable aluminum |
| Typical use | Signage, splashbacks, mid-rise facades | High-end facades, transit hubs |
For most commercial budgets, ACP is the pragmatic choice. Because only the outer skins are aluminum, raw material cost per square meter is far lower, and installation is faster thanks to lighter panels, simpler handling and on-site folding. Projects that specify building-grade ACP can meet strict facade codes while staying 40-60% below the cost of equivalent solid aluminum veneer. For interior applications such as kitchen splashbacks, bathroom waterproof cladding, shop interiors and feature walls, ACP is almost always the default choice. The total installed cost often decides the bid, and ACP typically wins on both material and labor.
Solid panels earn their premium in specific situations. Choose solid aluminum when the project is a landmark high-rise or transport hub expecting a 30+ year service life; when local code demands a fully non-combustible metal skin with no polymer core at all; when the design requires deep press-brake folds, visible weld seams or an anodized rather than coated finish; or when impact and vandalism resistance is critical in schools, stadiums, metro stations and prisons. Solid panels also repaint and repair more easily after damage.
Since the Grenfell inquiry, facade fire performance is the single most specified criterion on commercial projects. Standard PE-core ACP, classified B2, must not be used on high-rises in most jurisdictions. Instead, specify fire-rated ACP with mineral-filled cores rated Class A2-s1,d0 or Class B-s1,d0 under EN 13501-1. These panels retain the cost advantage of composite construction while meeting strict building codes. Our completed project cases include mid-rise commercial facades where A2-grade ACP was specified to satisfy local fire marshals.
ACP can be routed and folded on-site, which reduces cassette-tooling costs and lets fabricators create sharp boxed edges, column covers and window trims quickly. The PE or mineral core is exposed after routing, then folded and capped. Solid panels require factory press-braking, MIG or TIG welding and often backing-honeycomb stiffeners to prevent oil-canning on large flat spans. If your installation team is smaller, the schedule is tight, or on-site flexibility matters, ACP typically wins on install speed and logistics.
Both materials are available in polyester (PE) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) finishes. PE coatings are economical and suitable for interiors or protected exteriors; PVDF coatings offer 15-20 year fade resistance for harsh coastal or industrial environments. For signage and display applications, digital-printing-grade ACP accepts UV inkjet directly, eliminating the need for laminates. Solid panels can also be anodized for a distinctive metallic look that coated ACP cannot replicate.
Both materials are highly recyclable. Feiteng panels use recyclable LDPE core material, and the aluminum skins can be separated and recycled at end of life. Solid aluminum is essentially 100% recyclable without loss of properties. For green-building certifications such as LEED or BREEAM, request the material health declarations and recycled-content documentation from your supplier. Our sustainable development page outlines our closed-loop recycling and REACH/RoHS compliance.
Choose ACP for signage, interior cladding, kitchen and bathroom panels, and mid-rise facades where budget matters and a certified fire-rated core is available. Choose solid aluminum for landmark high-rises, transit infrastructure, and projects requiring an anodized or fully non-combustible finish. Still unsure? Contact Feiteng with your elevations, thickness requirements and target fire rating, and our engineering team will recommend the optimal grade, coating and thickness for your project.
Q: Can ACP be used on high-rise buildings?
A: Only if it carries a Class A2 or B1 fire rating with a mineral core. Standard PE-core B2 panels are prohibited on high-rises in most countries. Always confirm the EN 13501-1 classification with your supplier.
Q: How long does ACP last outdoors?
A: With a PVDF coating, expect 15-20 years of exterior service before noticeable fading. PE-coated panels are best reserved for interiors or protected facades. Feiteng guarantees PE coating for 10 years and PVDF for up to 20 years.
Q: Is ACP cheaper than solid aluminum?
A: Yes, typically 40-60% cheaper per square meter installed, because only the thin outer skins are aluminum and the panel is lighter to transport and lift.
Q: Can ACP be recycled?
A: Yes. The aluminum skins are fully recyclable, and Feiteng uses recyclable LDPE core material. At end of life, panels can be granulated and sorted by material type.
Q: What thickness should I specify?
A: 4 mm with a 0.5 mm skin is the industry standard for exterior facades. Use 3 mm for interior signage and feature walls, and 5 mm for heavy-duty or vehicle/ship applications.
